ESW-UB Project Leader: Solar Cargo Research
In Fall 2010, ESW National released an RFP for solar research programs, sponsored by SunEdison/MEMC. One category involved the use of solar technologies on cargo ships for diesel abatement. Likewise, friend and Co-Leader Mike Alcazaren and I led a team of interested students through the proposal stage of this project. Serving as a Co-Leader with Mike was truly a great experience, and got my feet wet in ESW leadership (a gateway drug, of sorts). I was specifically in charge of outreach to other chapters in an attempt to collaborate on the project. Unfortunately, other close chapters were not in a great position to collaborate, but it was a valuable experience reaching out to peers and generating conversation. Furthermore, I helped to organize meetings and divvy up research sections. Working with Mike (a great leader with more experience than myself), I was able to grow as a leader.
Below is the final proposal we submitted. We were awarded an $11,000 budget based on our proposal. Over the summer, Mike and I handed off the project to others as Mike and I focused ourselves on planning the 2011 ESW National Conference.
